Most Joyful Day

The most joyful day was having my first daughter. And later, to get my other two kids. And now, having my grandchildren would be the most joyful things. I always wanted to have four children, but I got three, and I’m very happy.

Is it different to be a mother and a grandmother?

The difference when you have your own kid, it’s very lovely, but it’s part of you. You feel the same love when you have your grandchildren because they are your descendants. Even though they are not part of your body, you still feel as much love as you feel for your children. And because you have experience with your children, you can use that knowledge better with your grandchildren.

Love Changes

The first time I fell in love was with my husband. We lived together for 27 years and had 3 kids. We didn’t go out anywhere, we didn’t do anything together. One day, I felt like he wanted to harm me. He started mistreating me. I left the house.

Luckily, I got my second opportunity where I met my other husband and I got married for a second time. This time, my husband was very nice. We got along and we used to go out together to many places. Unfortunately, he passed away.

My kids were all grown when I left my first husband. I stayed there until they all left.

My First Date

When I was young, about 15 or 16, there was a guy that I liked and I’d go and see him, but just to see him. My father usually would make everyone escape! When I was 16, I dated a guy, but my father would make him go away. Only when I was 16 did I meet my husband. My husband had a sister that was my cousin’s wife. So he used to live here in New York and he used to go to Puerto Rico, and that’s where I met him. I was the only child. That’s why my father was so protective…

I like to sew. Since I was young, I loved to do crafts, especially sewing. I had an aunt who had a sewing machine, and I was always learning from her how to sew, as well as cooking. That’s how I learned how to cook. And I didn’t know how to do big things, but I learned how to do little things for the dolls, those things. My children, whenever they want to cook something, they call me, so they can cook.

I teach a class Wyckoff Center on sewing, I taught everyone how to sew. We had a sewing class. We made a handbag, polos, curtains. It’s a little cloth bag, you can’t put a lot of heavy stuff, but it looks nice.

Young Trouble

I always liked to cook when I was a child. I never got into trouble because I was a good child. I didn’t have any brother or sisters. I was the only child so how was I going to get into trouble? The only time was when my uncle hit me. My uncle had a barbershop. I just decided to lay on the floor, and he would say, “Stand up, stand up!” And she would say, “No I want to stay here!” – on the floor of the barbershop. It was actually at my grandma’s house, but my uncle would cut people’s hair there. It’s where I was living.
