Most Joyful Day

I guess the birth of my first child was my happiest day. I was living in Manhattan at the time and Jewish people have a practice that when they’re expecting a baby, they don’t buy anything ahead of time. So we don’t want to have the furniture and the clothes in the house. So I had to ordered a crib and Macy’s had told me that you know I could call from the hospital and when the baby came, they’d deliver the crib. So I was in the hospital with my new baby and I call and they say, “Oh, well, we won’t get the crib there ’til another two weeks.” I was crying.

My mother came in from Baltimore. My family lives in Baltimore. So when I called after the baby was born, she went to Macy’s. And when she got finished talking to the sales-people there, I had the crib. So I came home and I had the crib and a pretty little pink snowsuit. My daughter was born in January. And I remember her in that. My mother had worked in department stores while in Baltimore, so she knew who to talk to,

I’m working on a family history now with my daughter and it’s very difficult because my mother did a lot of research. And my great grandfather had about eight siblings and each of them had about 10 children and they had children and my mother had many, many cousins and we have so many pictures. So my daughter’s helping me and we’re trying to match up the pictures with the story and it’s on my dining room table, which has been covered with this project for so long. I’m never going to be able to eat there again, but it’s a lot of work, but it’s very interesting.

I discovered that my grandfather had eight siblings and that he was from a second wife that his father’s first wife had died and so there’s family that I didn’t know anything about. There’s family who left Russia. So, I discovered with this project that there’s a lot of family who never came here. I imagine that after the war they probably didn’t survive. My grandparents came from Russia.
