What I Liked to Watch

I don’t like scary movies. Because they’re scary. I saw Friday the Thirteenth. I close my eyes. I’ll be a chicken. I just don’t like them. They frighten you, me anyway. I like the funny movies. Any kind, as long as it was funny. I’d watch them with my sisters and my brothers. There was nine of us. That’s not a few. We had a TV in our living room. I remember this favorite chair my father had. It was right by the window. We could all sit in it too. But that was during the day when he was at work.

We’d watch them pretty often. I loved the Honeymooners. I just like Ralph Kramden. He went on the singing show and Norton kept playing the song. The introduction part. And I think he had to name something. He said Ed Norton was the name of the song. I’ve been watching them for a long time now. I used to watch it with my family. The three stooges.

I used to love Lassie. I like dogs. I liked Lassie because I love dogs. When I was young, I had two of them. They were white with brown spots. My dogs stayed out in the backyard. They weren’t allowed in the house. We’d walk the dogs. Their names were Pup and Spot.

I was a teenager when the song came out. I danced with guys. A lot of them are long gone. I only dated my husband. Not like they do these days. We met in high school, through his cousin. We’re all from the same hometown. I was friends with his cousin.

When I’d go out dancing, I’d wear a dress, a skirt and blouse.

I was a teenager when I’d listen to Sam Cooke. I’d listen with my sisters and brothers. We’d listen in the living room. We had a record player. My parents let us listen on their record player. My favorite was “Bring it on Home.” When a new song came out by him, I’d still like that one. One of my sisters is very religious so she wouldn’t listen to stuff like that.

She was religious, my sister Hattie. There was nine of us. Seven girls and two boys. I was somewhere in the middle. We didn’t fight, not really. Some of them would argue but I wasn’t one to argue.

I sang in the talent show. I sang Blueberry Hill. I like the song. I started listening to it more recently. It’s been my favorite for a while. It was my first time performing in front of a group. I didn’t get stage fright.

Advice to Younger Self

I would not make the same mistake again. When you put it out there, you can’t take it back.

In school there was this guy, a real short guy who we called midget. If you wore stockings, it got a little snag and he would pull the snag and make it run. I don’t know what ever happened to him. He was someone I went to school with. He was older than most of the other kids.

I wanted to be mother. I think I had a baby doll. Yeah, I liked dolls. I loved to pretend to be a mom–I would play house. I babysat my older sister’s daughter. I have four children myself. Two boys and two girls.

I liked all my teachers. I was a good student. I wasn’t a trouble maker. I liked English and Math. I used the skills I learned too, I used math later in life. I didn’t work. I was a mother.

Pretty good at sewing. With a needle now, not on a machine. It’s harder than the machine, but my eyes are pretty good. I wouldn’t make clothes for myself, it was just sewing. Like for instance, if the hem or something would come out, I knew how to fix it. Or if a button fell off, for example. I would fix my family’s clothes if they needed it.

I also remember my father once told us… I was pretty good in spelling. But he said, “I betcha ain’t not a one of you,” and it was nine of us… He said, “cannot spell a word with a Q without using a U in it.”

So I tried and I tried and I tried and I tried. I couldn’t. But I found out there is a word with a Q without using a U in it. So I found out it was a word.

I remember the word:

Q-tip.
