Childhood Best Friend

My childhood best friend and I met in my Kindergarten class. Ms. Prime’s class.

Matt Linsky was a small kid with a blonde bowl cut. We were best, best friends all throughout elementary school. We both had a real interest and fascination with reptiles. We would go to the school library and get all the books on reptiles and print out pictures of cool snakes using the printers with the color photos that would take a long time. I don’t know why we thought that was a great use of time, but it was. Coming out of that, I actually really wanted to get a bearded dragon, which is a small type of lizard. I think I almost convinced by parents until they looked up the defense mechanism of it–I think it shoots blood out of its eyes—and they said absolutely not.

Me and Matt hung out all the time. I distinctly remember this 12-hour playdate we had once, that I had been looking forward to for a long time. We basically just hung out at his house. He had one of those air hockey tables, so we played that for a really long time. There’s this great picture in my house of the both of us really young on the same soccer team, which my dad was actually the coach of. I think we were both really bad at soccer, but we still enjoyed it.

We were very close in elementary school and then middle school happened and we started hanging out with different people. We always went to the same school and we were always friendly, but never really stayed in touch. I just looked him up because I haven’t thought about him in a while and he works in real estate somewhere now.

The childhood best friend is an interesting question just because who you are at that point in time and the types of people you attach to. I don’t have any problem with him, but we totally went our separate ways even though we were so tight in elementary school. We never had a specific falling out, but we made different friends in middle school and went our separate ways.
