Most Joyful Day

Oct 29, 2019

My grandson got into an accident. He entered a coma for 15 days. I was really sad. I thought he was not going to live because he wasn’t waking up. Later, my daughter called me and told me my grandson was good. I was also afraid because we didn’t have insurance in Puerto Rico. My grandson had a lot of fractures. Right now, I’m crying tears of happiness because he’s good, thanks to God.

I was really worried because my daughter was next to him, crying, being with him for those 15 days. I was worried also for my daughter because she wasn’t eating or drinking anything, just crying, crying. this happened this year, in July.

We are waiting for his bones to get better so we can take out the clamps. He was doing supply, so he broke his leg. When he was doing the supplying, the guy was supposed to hold the thing, didn’t hold it. So my grandson crashed into the wall. The doctor said if he was going straight into the wall, his chest would have hit and he would have died. But he had twisted sideways in time.

Love Changes

Life Story Club Contributor

Oct 22, 2019

I fell in love with my husband. We were dating for three to four months. I realized after one year of being married, and I had my first child and my second child came, he started changing. We were not getting along well. At first I fell in love with his personality and also the way he treated me. But later he started changing and that’s when I kicked him out, later in life.

My First Date

I was like 15 years old, and I liked to go out to the movies. But, whenever I dated someone it wasn’t ever serious. I dated a guy that was 28 years old and I was 15. But we didn’t have anything serious.

With my husband it was a different story. We met at a dance at a wedding, at a house. We started seeing each other more frequently and later we just got married.

We were really young. So after four months, we got married. We’re not married anymore. I had a bad experience with my husband. He’s dead now. I feel much better, I feel more free now.

Work Life

I grew up in Puerto Rico. I grew up helping my mom work and everything. Personally, I worked in all types of labors. Eventually, when I got to the U.S. I started working in sewing factories, with clothes. I messed up a lot of clothes along the way, but I enjoyed it. But what I really loved the most was being a home attendant, and working with my “viejito,” it means “old people” but it’s a loving way to say it, it’s not disparaging in any sense. If I could, I would still be working with them.

Why did you stop?

Rent became too expensive, so my mom told me to just live off of what the government is giving you right now. I couldn’t afford the cost of living.

I had various experiences. The first experience, I was coming out of school at 5:30 in Puerto Rico with my friends. I was walking with my friends because I didn’t have money for the bus. Since I was always the playful one, my friends dared me to take the nun’s clothes – clothing hair, to see whether t she was bald of whether she had hair. So I was like, I’m going to do that. So I ran to her and took that away from her! She didn’t have hair, so we were all laughing about that. Then somebody told my mom, and I said “No, I didn’t do it,” I denied it. At the end they hit me because I did it. I was always the playful one doing something…

Another day I was trying to defend my brother, because I was always defending my siblings, and always taking care of them because we didn’t have much money and my mom was always working. Because one day I was defending my brother, I almost got stabbed by somebody. I ran away to the barbershop and hid there. Nothing happened to me, but my mother asked her, “why did you enter into the fight?” I said, “I wanted to protect my siblings.”

I was always doing something, I was always climbing trees, not really bad things, but always on something. When I was a teenager I wanted to go dance, and then I’d jump from the window to the street, with my shoes in my hands. And I’d come back the next day and the parents would realize. The window was very low so I didn’t hurt myself. I was in a skirt…

A family tradition

A tradition that I do is Thanksgiving, but I usually go to one of my daughter’s house. But now I’m not sure because one of my grand-daughters is going to give birth in the same week as Thanksgiving! Due on Thanksgiving week. I might have to take the food to the hospital! The turkey in the hospital! We usually have rice, plantains, chicken, pork, salad…I always do the rice, plantains and escabeche. It’s kind of like ceviche but with green banana and instead of fish, it’s gizzard. The husband of the daughter does the turkey, everyone has their specialty. The turkey is deep fried!

I was born in Puerto Rico, Santurce. I came to New York in 1963, here I got married. It didn’t go well, but I got married and had 2 children. My daughters they are professionals, and I have 4 grandchildren. And the only girl grand-daughter that I have, she got married, and now I’m going to have my great grandchildren! I feel really happy that I didn’t live in anywhere else than Brooklyn, other than Puerto Rico. My oldest daughter lives in Staten Island and the youngest daughter in Queens. I go to Puerto Rico to visit once in a while…
