In school, José Martí was the greatest in Cuba. He was the patriot, he was the writer, he was the poet, he was the man who wanted to make Cuba independent and died for Cuba. So, at school, they taught me about Martí, all of Martí’s poetry. And the poetry of the simple verses that say, I am a sincere man, from where the palm grows. And when I die I want to cast my soul verses.

And so he died facing the sun on a horse. He was not a warrior, he was a poet, an intellectual, and he insisted that he was going to fight.
